A “Hatsu Shogatsu” literally means a celebration of a baby’s first New Year’s Day.
In order to pray for the child’s healthy growth and to ward off evil, hagoita and hamayumi are used to decorate.
− Hagoita
Hagoita decorations are put up to wish for a girl to grow up healthy and beautiful.

− Hamayumi
Hamayumi are put up with a wish that boys grow up to be healthy and strong like an arrow that vanquishes evil.
